Christmas is coming to soon

It really is. On the brighter side, that means Thanksgiving is coming much faster, and Yami will be here for that. Hopefully that will be happy making!

I tried a new recipe and forgot to take a picture!! It was from The Starving Students Vegetarian cookbook. It was the Asparagus Pie, and it was great. Definitely a remake. I still plan on going through these cookbooks, it just isn't affordable for me to do it all the time. So I doubt I'll be done in a year with any of them. I will try to remember a picture next time I make it. I'll also look for things that can be made out of stuff my mum already has in the pantry and fridge. If I can, that will help me get through the recipes quicker!

I ordered a bed frame from Walmart. A simple one that takes out the need for a box spring. It should be here today, and then my mattress will be up off the floor. I can also store stuff under it, so some of these boxes can go away. I like that if you find a head/base board you like, you can buy the attachments and put them on there. All the reviews said no tools were needed and it was less than 5 min. to put together. We'll see when it gets here! It says its on the truck for delivery!

I'm off to do my Chinese homework!

Rawr

I still exist! Being broke, I totally fell off the cooking thing. -Sigh- But I'm alive!

I'm still in Chinese class, and really enjoying it! This week we started learning time. I need to practice characters more. Thats the hardest part. We need to know more characters than she said we would. That's okay though, It just furthers us along.

I took a knitting class with mom. I'm making a scarf. Its slow going, but I love it too. I work on it while I watch tv. We were only taught how to cast on, and the basic knit. I think next week we will go back and learn the pearl knit and how to cast off. She said those are the only two knits, and they are just modified to produce everything. I want to make gloves and hats.

Anime Stl. I'm going! I just wish they would post dates. I want to wear loli outfits to it, but I think I will be to fat still. We'll see! Either way, I'm going.

Really don't know what else to say at the moment. Its to early! I'm going to watch Pokemon and clean my room.

2 Recipes and a Ring

Alrightie! As the title says, I've got two recipes today!

The first is Portobella Mushrooms stuffed with Savory Bread Crumbs
15-Minute Vegetarian pg 194
Serves 4 (One mushroom each)
Cal: 218, Fat: 7, Protein: 9, Carbs: 29, Fiber: 3, Chol.: 4.
WW Points: 4

This one is actually pretty good. Mine are a little top heavy because I could only find three packs of mushrooms, and no individuals. I wasn't getting extra. They aren't really what I would call savory though. Savory is a taste I think of when I think about Fish or meat (well, how meat used to taste..) Maybe grilled or something. These actually had a slightly bitter taste to me? Very slight, they are still good. I don't think there is anything I would change. This recipe taught me where the broiler was! I'm not some great cook, and I've never used it. I thought it was under the oven, and I cleaned that thing out because we store pans in there. NOPE. Its actually in the oven. I cleaned it for nothing. On a plus note, my mother told me they did used to be under the ovens, so I wasn't totally off base. She thought it was there too.
Anyway, remake value: Moderate

My second recipe is Mushroom, Radish and Celery Salad with Lemon and Garlic
Same book, naturally. Page 77.
Serves 8
Cal: 52 Fat: 8 Pro: 1 Carb: 5 Fiber: 1 Chol: 0
WW Point 1

This recipe is boring. That is the nicest way to put it. Flat out boring. Its not disgusting or anything, and I can definitely finish it. Will I make it again, no. If I had the ingredients on hand, and nothing else to do with them...then yes, because its not BAD. Would I purposely pick up the ingredients for this recipe. Not at all. It is nice that its so low in points if you're on the WW wagon. Its incredibly simple and easy to make. Its supposed to go on full leaves of lettuce. I couldn't find butter lettuce in full leaves at Walmart, thus, I bought the bagged salad kind.

Remake value: LOW unless ingredients are just laying around waiting to go bad.

In happy news, I made my first ring! Its not the greatest, but I'm pretty proud of it!

I bought a book to teach me wire jewelry, because I love it. That was my first attempt. I'm pretty happy with it. I did have some problems with the banding around the three main wires, to keep them in place, but it works. Mostly. I really really want to learn how to do the filigree settings and such for my own rings and necklaces. I haven't found any classes around here. I'd like to, because it seems much more involved than just wrapping wire. If I can't though, there is always Youtube and books.

I also got my books for Chinese class. I'm really excited. I'm glad that I have no other classes to take with it, so hopefully I can really concentrate on it and learn the language. Having no one to really talk to, I plan to get music and dramas to watch/listen to...so I can hear native speakers. it only meets once a week, so I don't know how I'm going to practice MY speech. We'll see. I'm off now.

:D

Today's recipe was Mushroom and Cheese Quesadillas.
15-Minute Vegetarian
Pg. 178
Cal: 377 Fat:15 Protein: 15 Carbs: 46 Fiber: 3 Choles: 30
WW points, 8

I love these. I'm honestly not sure I would change anything about these. :D They are tasty. It did take longer than 15 min, simply because you have prep, waiting for the liquid to be almost gone, and I can only cook one at a time in my pan. I've already got one packed for lunch tomorrow, with another salad. It made a good dinner. The Nut. Info. doesn't include my salad, which was just greens, about a tbsp of Parmesan and a bit of lemon juice. The recipe does say "standard" size tortillas. Medium. No packages say standard. Medium was a PERFECT fit. When you first combine the things in the pan, it looks like it will be way to much, but it cooks down nicely. I am noticing a trend in these recipes, that will get on my nerves quick. No real sizes for some things, like the tortilla..and that can of chipotle in the last recipe. Anyway, these are very very yummy.

Remake Value: High

Side note, I'm behind already! I didn't think I was actually going to be able to continue, but I will try. Simply because I'm broke. This and the next two recipes are sponsored by my Mum. Mostly. (She doesn't know I shoved my 5 dollars in her purse.) The next two are also mushroom recipes, so that I would need less ingredients. I'm trying to bunch them together like that.

I'm getting my text books next week, so I can start looking at them before class starts. Its going to be so hard and exciting. CHINESE. WOO. I can't wait. I'm thinking if I don't make it into the nursing program, I'm going to take my Office Administration degree and go for GS jobs...or I'll get back into the CIS program. Hopefully, I'll get in. Applications go in in October.

Time to go start laundry!

Chipotle Corn Chowder

So, I made my second (first posting) recipe out of 15-Minute Vegetarian.

Chipotle Corn Chowder pg 94
Serves 6
WW points per serving 2
Cal: 127
Fat:3

I like this soup, but there several things I would change. This soup is not just spicy, its HOT. I like spicy food, but this was unbearable for me to eat! My advice to anyone who is making it, cut the chipotle chilies in half, or as I did, make a second batch without them and combine them. It was much easier to eat afterward. Still spicy without making me cry/sweat/down the towns entire water supply. The recipe calls for "1 large can Chipotle Chile en adobo". My Walmart only carried a 7oz can. I don't know if this is what the book considers large. I hope so, because it was more than enough. This soup is also thicker than the average chowder. Actually, the rest of my family was having Skyline Chili for dinner (A bean-less meat based chili over noodles) and it was thick enough to fool my brother into thinking it was the chili. This is still good stuff though, and the multi-servings will last for lunches.

Remake Value: Moderate if adjusted.

The second (first) recipe I made, was last week. I made the Bread and Garlic soup. It kind of reminded me of chicken noodle soup, with the soggy bread. I have no picture of it. Its a good way to get rid of stale bread crumbs. Really its just garlic/salty broth with bread. My advice, add Parmesan cheese to it. That made it much better.

Bread and Garlic Soup pg 86
Serves 4
WW points: 2
Cal: 107
Fat: 7
Remake value: Low

Well, that is all for now!

Back

My Journal is back! I'm going to do the Julia Julie thing...and work my way through a cook book as I try to lose weight with Alli. And, I'm going to talk about my Chinese when I start...and I don't know. Maybe my journal will get interesting!

My first cookbook is 15 Minute Vegetarian. I chose it because most of the recipes are healthy. Its also QUICK. I like QUICK. I think the highest points I saw (if you're on a weight watchers scale) is 10. :D So, I'll put up my first entry tomorrow. I have to do 3-4 recipes a week to finish in a year. Of course, I can't put the recipes up here, but I will post pictures and what I think...calories and fat for anyone else following Alli like me..and WW points. I left out the sauces and condiments unless a recipe refers back to them, because what am I going to do with those? I will also leave out one drink, because it contains rum, and I do not drink. So, tomorrow I will post the first recipe, Chipolte Corn Chowder.

Chinese for me!

I have officially signed up to take Chinese. I am beyond excited! Duckie actually signed up to take it with me, which is happy. I'll have someone to practice with. Its important to have someone to practice with, or I'll fall so behind. The class only meets once a week, on Thursday nights at SWIC. I can't wait for it to start.

I'm so bored. I'm waiting for Yami to come back from her "be RIGHT back". -Insert slight note of irritation.- Obviously, it wasn't a be right back, so I'm looking for something to do! So, randomness I guess.

I got a letter from my penpal! I thought she wasn't going to write me anymore. It had been a long time. Now I need to come up with a picture to send in my reply. I send a picture with every letter. I want it to be something interesting. I can't think of something interesting at the moment. I've sent a flower, a fish, Moosie wearing the pin she gave me. Oooh. I think I just got an idea. We have an overgrown (pretty) flower bed...and I have tiny hippos! They will appear to be in the jungle!

It's so hot here! Its been in the 90s all week, with heat indexes in the 100s. Going outside is horrible. Just into the garage is horrible. Fans are a wonderful thing.

I can not find a white DVD player, anywhere. I want all my appliances to be white. I don't want black, but that is all there is. Silver too. I also can't find a white corner bookshelf for under 100. I find LOTS of black ones. Exactly what I want, except they are the wrong color. Its driving me crazy. A lot of the black ones are in the 30-50 dollar price range, which is perfect for me. The price for wall cubes is absurd as well. 20 bucks for one cube. My father is making them for me instead, and I will paint them. I should just learn how to make furniture. I'd be better off. I don't have that much patience when it comes to that stuff though.

Time to go clean or something.

Cho
